It wasn't easy. I tried learning from others' blogs. I tried YouTube videos. I tried books that came with DVDs. Nothing helped.

Last month I attended Bead Week at North Ranch Escapees park in Congress Arizona, an annual event that follows Woodcarving Week. It was five days of beading classes. One of which was bead crochet. I was excited! Maybe with one on one tutoring I would learn.

It was frustrating. It was confusing, but I did walk away with an understanding of how it works. At the end of the class, I went back to the RV and practiced with beads smaller than the 6s we had in class. I used 8s. Finally success! I have since made three crocheted bracelets and am currently working on the fourth.

Few more bracelets I made recently:

I can't remember the name of the first one.

This one is called a Cellini spiral. The goal is to sketch something each and every day. A list of prompts is supplied so you have an idea for what to draw. I joined this challenge. Not that I think the content is bad really. I'm just not consistent. I have not done much in the way of art this year, and I am trying to get back to a regular practice.

In my last post I told of two of my paintings being accepted to a juried art show at Delicato Winery. This is an annual show. Neither painting sold, but I didn't really want them to. I will enter again next year, but submit paintings that I would like to sell.

This coneflower picture is one I have been wanting to paint for a while. They are such pretty flowers. I have had the reference photo for a while. It was painted with a (gasp) set of Prang watercolors. So not what I usually paint with, but for the sketchbook, it's okay. I will be painting this one again, either with Holbein, or Daniel Smith watercolors, to make a comparison. I will post the comparison as it gets done. Bye for now
Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-40788796187570809502013-01-07T11:49:00.000-08:002013-01-07T11:49:21.319-08:00FocusWe are one week into the new year today. I meant to post earlier than this. I don't usually choose theme words for the year, but this year I have. I chose the word earlier, but as of today, Jan 7 I have even more reason why this word is appropriate. My word is FOCUS. This year I am planning to focus more on art. Specifically painting, oils, acrylics, and watercolor. The reason I chose focus was because I tend to get a bit "scattered" with what I am doing. Yesterday, though, I found out that two paintings I submitted in a local Fine Art show were accepted. This is a juried show, and I had heard that the competition was quite tough. I made it past the jury and am in. I didn't win any awards, but that's okay. I MADE IT IN! I feel like I graduated! The only downside is that these two paintings had to be available for sale, and I had really wanted to keep them. They may not sell, and then again, they may. We shall see.
A little watercolor painting I painted in a sketchbook:
Bowie cat sleeping.

I have just recently started playing with
an Ipad app called Auryn Ink. It simulates painting with watercolor
paints. I really was struggling with the process but then got a stylus
to use. This made it much easier to draw. I didn't try filling in with
solid color, just used thin strokes to show the texture of his fur.

Last Month I had the pleasure of attending the Pacific International
Quilt Show. It is one of the largest on the west coast and one I enjoy
immensely. They have and incredible display of quilts from all over the
globe and an unbelievable market for shoppers.

You will find
patterns, fabric, and sewing machines. Of course embellishments too.
That is where I came across the kumihimo disks. Kumihimo is a form of
braiding normally done on a wooden loom type stand called a maru dai.
In order to make it more accessable for quilters not to need to buy
expensive equipment an alternative has been devised. It is a foam disk
that performs similar to the wooden setup. Of course I had to try it so I got one (mine is plexiglass though) and some fibers to work with. I played with the fibers then moved on to beads. This bracelet is my first beaded creation. It was fun and easy to make. I do think I will be making more as I enjoy the process and find it meditative.

Saturday morning a group of us "girls" took a road trip to the semi local
lavender farm. A lovely place called Lavender Hollow Farm. There were 5
of us in all. Myself, my daughter and 3 friends. We had signed up for
a class to make lavender wands. Oh what fun we had! What should have
been easy proved to be more of a challenge than we expected! We did have fun, though some of us had more success than others.

This particular farm is only open to the public 6 weekends of the year in the late spring. The rest of the year it is simply someone's home. They do have a mail order business selling lavender products.

We arrived early, which was good because it was one of those 100 plus degree days. Class was held under a canopy. Barbara staked out good seats for us while the rest of us procured supplies <g> She managed to get us seats with a fan directly pointing toward us. For the next hour we worked diligently on our projects. </g>

This picture doesn't show all of us, only Elionora, Barbara and Lisa I'm not in the picture and neither is my daughter Sarah. There were probably 20 or so more people taking the class, but this photo was taken before it began.

This is what the wand looked like halfway through the process. The lavender smelled so good!
And this is what the finished wand looks like. I added another wider gossamer ribbon but don't have a picture of that.

When we were finished it was time for lunch. We had a lavender themed box lunch where several of the items were flavored with culinary grade lavender. It was quite tasty. All of this was followed up with shopping at the gift shop. I bought a teapot with a lavender motif on it. I will be sketching it soon. Sarah and I finished the day off with manicures and pedicures.

I arrived home in the late afternoon and found that my hubby had passed his "Extra" exam and had advanced to the top level on his amateur radio operators license. This called for dinner out to celebrate. We had dinner at a local Mexican restaurant with good friends Elionora and David. All in all it was a lovely day.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-40933676109413832622012-06-15T17:22:00.002-07:002012-09-18T20:05:25.789-07:00Monterey: View From a Bicycle Part 2

After placing the painting in a room where I see it a lot, I was troubled with the left hand side of the painting. The problem was glaring at me, and I wouldn't be satisfied without correcting it. It took maybe 15 minutes to correct the greenery behind those trees on the left, but I am much happier with the results. I ordered the frame for it. It is similar in tone and color to the larger tree trunk.

Saturday I am going on an excursion with my daughter and some friends to a local lavender farm. We are making lavender wands and having a special lunch featuring some of their lavender culinary products. It is 24"x36". I was a bit intimidated but pushed through and got it done. The reason it's this large? Well, I wanted to put it above the fireplace mantel and anything much smaller just didn't look right.

Bob and I like to hike and take our cameras with us frequently. This view was one that was taken at the Swinging Bridge at Yosemite National Park in September of 2009. It was a lovely late summer/early autumn day, and the trees had not really changed color yet, but would be any day. Perfect weather. We enjoyed the day we spent there, and I hope to go back soon....Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-18737000144288785142011-04-14T17:11:00.000-07:002011-04-14T17:20:42.979-07:00Postcards and Tea

I belong to a group that is primarily focused on watercolor pencils. One of the fun things we do is a monthly postcard swap. The painting has to be done mostly with watercolor pencils and be on a 4" x 6" postcard. It has been a fun project and I have learned a lot by doing this. Each month we are given a challenge and this one was to be monochromatic in blues.

This is the card I sent away last month. The teapot is one I got from my Mother in law. I really love white and blue porcelain, and was sorry to have to send the card away to it's new home.

The next card due to go out this week is monochromatic again in reds, but I haven't started it yet. I think I'll go have a cup of tea and get started.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-72297844302737660382011-01-20T16:46:00.001-08:002011-04-14T17:25:45.054-07:00Elkhorn Slough in September

Elkhorn Slough in September, originally uploaded by kquilts.

Every year we try to take a little time out for a trip close to our birthday time. This year was Monterey and a side trip to Moss landing. We hiked at Elkhorn Slough and took lots of pictures. Just after this trip I started taking my watercolor class and our teacher lets us choose our subjects to paint and then is there to guide and advise as we work on our individual projects. I am loving this class.
Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-10733921673226347202011-01-14T07:28:00.000-08:002011-01-14T07:44:42.759-08:00Reflections on 2010 and Goals for 2011I'm sitting here this morning and thinking back over the past year and setting goals for 2011. I started painting with acrylics in September of 2009 and continued with those classes through 2010. I plan to continue with that. I am currently working on a painting of Yosemite's El Capitan that is quite big. At least I think so. It is the largest painting I have done so far.

I had been playing with watercolors at home for the past 2 years and not really making progress there, so in September of 2010 I signed up for a class at a local art center. I'm so glad I took the class, because now I understand better how the paints behave and how to get the effects I want. I will try to get some of those paintings up here on the blog this weekend. In 2011 I am going to try to do a watercolor painting a week to post. I know I'm already two weeks into the year, but will start this this week with that. So, that's 50 paintings.

The new thing for this year is that I am going to be working with pastels. I have the materials to begin that now (Christmas presents). So far I have just done some practice making different marks and learning techniques- no pictures yet.

So I have big plans for the year. I guess I better get to work!Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-18038955680248832502010-12-23T07:10:00.001-08:002010-12-23T07:10:31.731-08:00Coastal Bike Ride

Coastal Bike Ride, originally uploaded by kquilts.

Almost every year on my birthday we take a mini vacation-getaway. This year we went to Monterey and took our bikes with us. Our first day was spent at Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing hiking the estuary.

The last day we took our bikes down to the bike path and rode. Now this path is long- 29 miles to be exact. It starts at Castroville and goes all the way to Pebble beach. We did not ride all of it that day. We started just north of Cannery row and rode south. The path here follows the shoreline so we had a beautiful view the whole way!
Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-87496633112934397422010-12-09T08:24:00.001-08:002010-12-09T08:25:05.750-08:00Winter Scene

winter scene, originally uploaded by kquilts.

This small scene is one I painted in my watercolor class. A perfect day to stay in and paint, so that is what I did. I painted a little exercise in negative painting, which I'm not sharing here. Not great results with that. While it was drying I painted this little iris. Iris' are my favorite flower and I have wanted to learn to paint them well. This was my first attempt at it with watercolor.
Done on Arches cold press paper- 140 lb. 5 1/2" x 7 1/2"

I finished the afternoon off by making a big pot of chili for dinner. During that year I have painted two still lifes, a landscape, a floral-close up and my daughter in laws cat. I have been trying to vary my projects so I get instruction on a lot of different types of painting, so I decided I needed to learn how to paint people- faces so that I could say I had tried portraits. This one was painted during the late spring course of the class. I am a slow painter, and most of this was done during class time which is two hours a week. She is not anyone I know. I got the reference photo off of the image library at WetCanvas. After painting this I realized the little girl looks amazingly like one of my cousins.

I am currently painting an ocean sunset scene and should be finished with it soon.

My other news is that I have signed up for a local class on watercolor painting. I have waited for a year for this class and when it was available last winter I could not sign up for it. A good thing I didn't because of other things happening in my life I would have missed quite a bit of it. You will be seeing some of the watercolor class work soon.
Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-81311956433795816892010-08-20T09:07:00.000-07:002010-08-20T09:09:08.933-07:00I haven't got a photo taken of my latest picture yet. It had been out of the house for 3 weeks, because I sent it to our local county fair. I have entered things in the past into the fair, but never a painting. It had always been quilting or knitting projects. I am a beginning painter, so was not expecting much. The competition is tough. There are some amazing artists in my area, so I was pleasantly surprised when we went to the fair and I saw that this had got an "Honorable Mention" I would like to try again next year, but rumor has it that there might not be a fair so we'll have to wait and see on that one.
Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-59784460153178241392010-06-06T11:01:00.001-07:002010-06-06T11:01:33.571-07:00Feria and entering projects in the County Fair

Feria , originally uploaded by kquilts.

I have been taking acrylic painting classes since last September. I go once a week unless something derails my plans. I have missed a few times when I just couldn't go, but generally I'm there every week.

We have done still life twice now, and I have done landscape and one floral. This little kitty is the most recently finished project. She is a beautiful kitty that resides with my son and daughter. She has a lot of fur which was a challenge to paint because she has so many colors intermingled together.

I am now working on faces and portraits and will post that when finished. I am using an image from the WetCanvas image reference library of a little girl wearing a magenta colored straw hat.

I have entered quilts and knitting in the county fair in years past, but this year I entered paintings. Entered are my hydrangea painting, the landscape I painted using a reference photo from Kate Johnson, and a lily I painted. We shall see how they do. The judges are judging today, but I won't know till June 16 how I did. There is a lot of competition there and I am new at this so I don't really have expectations of winning, but it is fun to enter and get critiqued.
Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211700746134203823.post-7004731949648184802010-03-21T15:28:00.001-07:002010-03-21T15:28:55.078-07:00Getting sidetracked....

class landscape, originally uploaded by kquilts.

In January I signed up for my third 6 week session of painting classes. I really had big plans for the 2010 year- things I want to accomplish in my artistic endeavors but you know how it is....Things happen and plans get set aside. My single accomplishment so far this year has been one painting. It is done in acrylics from and inspiration photo from Cathy Johnson's monthly photo resource group on Flickr- Thanks Kate for the gracious sharing of these resource photos. I have not done anything else- no artist journal pages or drawing. I hope to be back soon with more to share but till then I will be working on health issues.

More soon.....
Karen
Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11852732874371893782noreply@blogger.com2
